The rumors first surfaced when the pair were spotted together at a fundraiser on Necker Island. Costner explained that it was actually a trip to Branson's island where he and Jewel first crossed paths. Despite their age difference of 19 years, both Costner and Jewel have established successful careers in the entertainment industry.
Costner expressed concern that the speculation about their relationship could damage their friendships. "I'm worried that speculation about the pairs... is getting in the way of our ability to be just friends," he said.
