California Earthquake Raises Concerns

California earthquake raises concerns

219 tremors hit near Bakersfield in the past year

Expert warns of potential foreshock

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A magnitude 5.2 earthquake struck near Bakersfield on Tuesday night, raising concerns about the potential for a larger temblor. The quake struck at 9:09 p.m. about 18 miles northeast of Bakersfield, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was felt throughout the area, including in Fresno, Visalia and Porterville. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. However, the quake was the largest in the area in more than a year. A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck the Central Valley on Monday. "This is a reminder that we live in earthquake country," said Ken Hudnut, a research geologist with the U.S. Geological Survey. "We need to be prepared for the possibility of a larger earthquake." Hudnut said there is a 1 in 20 chance that Tuesday's earthquake was a foreshock to a larger temblor. He said the area has been experiencing a swarm of earthquakes in recent months, which is often a sign of increased seismic activity. "We're in a period of heightened earthquake activity," Hudnut said. "We need to be prepared for the possibility of a larger earthquake." Residents are urged to take steps to prepare for an earthquake, including having a plan in place, assembling an emergency kit and securing heavy objects in their homes.
