Early Life and Calling: A Journey of Faith

Saint Teresa of Calcutta (born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu) was born in Skopje, Macedonia on August 26, 1910. From a young age, she exhibited a deep sense of compassion and a desire to serve the needy.

In 1928, Teresa left her home to join the Loreto Sisters in Ireland. She professed her religious vows in 1931, taking the name Teresa after Saint Thérèse of Lisieux.

Missionaries of Charity: A Life of Service

In 1946, while traveling by train to Darjeeling, Teresa experienced a profound spiritual encounter that prompted her to abandon her teaching career and dedicate herself to serving the poorest of the poor in Calcutta.

With the support of Archbishop Ferdinand Perier, Teresa founded the Missionaries of Charity in 1950. The congregation's mission was to provide care for the abandoned, sick, and dying.

Expanding Influence and Global Recognition

The Missionaries of Charity quickly grew under Teresa's leadership, establishing homes and centers for the needy in over 120 countries.

Teresa's unwavering devotion and tireless efforts earned her widespread recognition and admiration. She received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979 and was canonized as a saint by the Catholic Church in 2016.
